The family relocated from Baltimore to Edmonds, Washington when she was six years old Her father Jack was sociologist who worked for the University of Washington as a vice president for internal communications. He later, he was the president of the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association as well as the mother Karen was the special education teacher at Seaview Elementary School in Edmonds.
