Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third child of the family. She was only a young toddler when her father who was a carnival barker died. Her mother was forced to work in jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts in which she went to high school. After only two school years the young woman left to pursue the acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be filled with challenges and In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime, but theatrical work eluded her. She then worked as the hat checker in the nightclub before calling it quits and returning to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. She earned money by performing during the daytime working as an Usherette. In addition, she was a drama student and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
